Day 61 & 62: At Chabysh, The Krygyz Horse Festival

The life of the Krygyz revoloves around horses and horses are the wings of the krygyz. I attended a 2 days horse festival which is the HIGHLIGHT of my trip in Krygyzstan. I specially extended my visa for this event so you should know that it is really worth it.

All the events at this festival are in relation with the krygyz traditions and I shall introduce them to you one by one. They are all very interesting.

EVENT NUMBER 1: Horseback Wrestling. The is an event where man fight each other while riding on horses. The one who falls off the horseback loses. Warriors were present, heros were born. We should not forget the fact that the Krygyz are the descendents of Ghankis Khan.

EVENT NUMBER 2: Kyz Kuumai or Kiss The Girl. In this event, the guy has to catch up with the girl and kiss her while galloping. Next, the girl will have to catch up with the guy and hit him back while galloping for kissing her.

Now lets see the first couple. He had caught up with her.

Photobucket

And he kissed her!!

Photobucket

Now thats a victory!!

Photobucket

Now girl is trying to hit the guy. Can she do it?

Photobucket

She missed!!!

Photobucket

And so he got away....

Photobucket

Now lets see the next couple. Hmmm... Oh no... she is too fast for him..

Photobucket

And he is too fast for her too... No wonder they are an item.

Photobucket

How about the next couple? Oh he had caught up with her.

Photobucket

And he kiss her once...

Photobucket

Photobucket

And he must be happy...

Photobucket

But not for long.. now he is gonna get it from her... haha.. Si Kin Na.. Mai Zao!!! :P

EVENT NUMBER 3: Manas Epic. The Manas Epic is Krygyzstan's most important culture treasure and is also one of the world's greatest oral poem. It has half a million lines of verse!!! The event is about reciting this great poem. Damn.. How to remember half a million lines?? Well, but they did it...

EVENT NUMBER 4: Pick Up the coin. The event is about the skill of horse riding. Competitors are to gallop along a fix route and at the same time picking up coins from the ground without falling off the horse. This requires accurate and precise timing.

EVENT NUMBER 5: "Ulak Tartysh" or "Kok Boru" or Goat Snatching. It is a national horse game. Bascially it is like playing rugby. But instead of on foot, you are on horse. Instead of using a ball, a live goat is used.

Here is the sheep.

Photobucket

Off to the game.

Photobucket

Now the game has started. All of them are going after the guy with the ball, erm.. I mean sheep.

Photobucket

And he got it. He is snatching it. But did you see that? Where is the head of the sheep? It is gone!!

Photobucket

Lets take a closer look.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Ya.. The sheep is confirmed dead.. It is now headless. It is dead meat.. What a game. Sheep snatching, anyone?

Photobucket

So, who are these people who plays such a bloody game? Hmm.. they are the descendents of the great ghankis khan. They life revoloves around horses. They are the son of warriors. Lets take a closer look at them.

Men or woman, they ride horses.

Photobucket

I said get up, not stand up.

Photobucket

Erm, aint you too old to be riding a donkey? But you look cute on it. HAha..

Photobucket

And ofcourse, after riding for so many years, the krygyz have great riding skills.

Photobucket

Not only do they ride, they hunt.

Photobucket

And they also hunt with eagles. Eagles are their best hunting mates.

This 2 days event is indeed worth the money I spent to extend my visa. I hope you enjoyed looking at these photos as much as I had enjoyed the event. I also hope that you had gain some knowledge about the krygyz life. Here, I had presented you an insight into the krygyz culture and traditions without being there youself. I hope you felt as good as you were actually present at the event yourself.

Stay tuned for more exciting photos!!!
