Day 105: Riga
Date: 15 DEC 2008
Riga (Latvian: Rīga) the capital of Latvia, is situated on the Baltic Sea coast on the mouth of the river Daugava and is the largest city in the Baltic states. The Historic Centre of Riga has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is particularly notable for its extensive Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) architecture, which UNESCO considers to be unparalleled anywhere in the world.
Strolling along the crumbling streets of Riga is the main thing to do; And with parks and wide boulevards lying around, I spent one full day wondering around this wonderful capital of Latvia. The following photos shown below includes but are not limited to photographs of the Old Riga, St Peter's church, Dome Cathedral and the Freedom Monument etc.
The flag of Latvia.
The freedom monument with soldiers guarding it.
The park.
Look! Its those Love Locks again.
This looks so loving but the bird shit on the man's head sort of ruined it. Haha.
This river is beginning to freeze.
City Canal, the old defensive Moat.
Every city/town have its own logo. Lets see whats Riga's.
More pictures.
Some photos taken in a church. Rebuilding in progress.
After a long day of sight seeing, it was really nice of Diana, my host here in Riga, and her flatmate to prepare a nice Latvian dinner for us. And oh, I said us because besides me, they were also hosting another french guy at the same time.
This is Diana and her flatmate cooking for us. Everything we had for dinner, from fruits to meat to wine were all from Diana's farm.
Her cosy flat.
And of course I enjoyed my dinner!!
Before I end this post, here's something to think about.
Everyone I met had been telling me the same thing. GLOBAL WARMING!!! They all said that 10 years ago, there used to be 3 months of snow each winter but now they only have 3 weeks of snow. That is really something quite sad to hear about. This is something serious. We really have to do something about it. Especially in Asia, in terms of being GREEN, we are way way behind Europe.
I mean we do talk about global warming but we don't actually "see" the effects of it. Seeing is believing. In Singapore, for example, it is hot all year round. So when we talk about "oh ya, global warming, it is getting hotter each year", we don't actually see the effect of it. We don't actually see it happening. Unlike in countries where it snows lesser each year, they can really see the effect. What do most people in Singapore do? It gets warmer, so blast the air conditioner and lower the temperature. All these causes greater harm. Its time we learn.
I felt quite sad cause I was expecting to see snow snow and more snow everywhere. Come on, its winter!! But still I see none.
Separation of trash is another issue. Yeah, we do have different bins for plastics, papers and glasses. How about green trash? I am referring to Organic waste. I think we should also have a separate bin just for Organic waste. I mean come on, it is not necessary to burn Organic waste (food for example). There are better ways to deal with it then to burn it.
