Day 112: Helsinki
Date: 22 DEC 2008
Woke up pretty early to catch the first ferry over to Finland. This was where I took my ferry. The port of Tallinn.
It turned out that the ferry was actually a cruise ship with rooms, beds, restaurants, casinos, etc. And with all the decorations it is definately ready for Xmas.
And finally, TA TA!!!! I am in Finland!!!
Well, Helsinki is a huge city with wide streets and tall buildings. It is unlike all the other european cities that I have been to so far. I felt very much as if I am walking down Orchard Road besides the fact that everything here is so much more expensive. Comm'on, I am in Northern Europe, one of the most expensive places in the world!!!
Another thing which Helsinki is very different from where I had been to so far is that you can find lots of blacks here. Guess it have something to do with the history. Must read into it. And oh, sadly, despite the fact that I am already so far up north, there is still NO SNOW in Helsinki. NO Snow in Helsinki, Finland during Winter?? Thats weird. BLAME IT ON GLOBAL WARMING!!!! Damn, I want my snow!!!! i am so going to do my part to help slow down global warming!!!!!
After a quick walk in the city, I went to visit a very unique church. I cant remember the actual name for it but it is special because it was built from rocks.
How do you play this? It must be real difficult.
Then I went to see a special stadium. This is a picture taken along the way.
Want to know how expensive is Finland? I paid 2EUROS (which is $4.20 SINGAPORE DOLLARS) just to TAKE A LEAK!!! Thats a lot of money just to PEE isnt it? I cant remember when was the last time I had ever paid to enter a toilet.
Anyway, enough of the toilet issue. I cant remember when but Olympics was held here some years back and so after answering to nature's call, I went to visit the stadium.
Ok, thats was the last picture taken with my nikon. My camera had decided to take a rest forever. It had somehow stop working. So I had to use my lousy camera phone.
Thats the Olympics logo.
Then I went to see a weird monument.
And took a walk in the cemetry. Unlike the scary cemetries in Asia, the cemetries here were actually design for peope to have a walk.
Ok, after taking 3 photos with my lousy camera phone, my memory card got full. I had never used it for phototaking before and believe it or not, this was actually the first proper camera phone that I own. Well, not really proper, its lousy. So thats it for today. No more photos. I am now in a dilemma. I am thinking of getting a new camera cause I think traveling without a camera is abit meaningless and I love taking photos. But the thing is of all places, why must my camera break down here? In Finland? In the most expensive place of my trip?? sigh...
So I spent the rest of the day doing sightseeing with no photos taking.
Oh, I also decided to leave Helsinki for Rovaniemi tonight. Why? Cause Xmas is just round the corner and I cant resist the call of the north!! I am going to the real cold, to experience the real winter, my first winter, my first white Xmas. Thats the reason why I name this trip "The Cold Journey".
So as I took a overnight train out of Helsinki into Rovaniemi, this question kept repeating itself in my head. "To buy or not to buy?"
