Day 79: Genoese Fortness @ Sudak

Sudak, being an important stop on the silk road from China, is a well defended trading centre. As such, how can I give it a miss? And so I went to visit the Genoese Fortness, a fortness which survived from that era.

Arriving from Simferopol, I have to change to a local bus here in Sudak.

A 15-20mins bus ride brought me to the fortness doorstep.

It is so peaceful and quiet here that I aint see noone around except for this handsome horsey who was filling his hunger.

Photobucket

Opps... Sorry sorry.. I dont mean to disturb your lunch... Please dont stare at me.

Photobucket

Making my way up to the fortness.

This once impregnable complex is perched on a massive seaside cliff.

And in a true Ukrainian fashion, anyone is allowed to clamber all over it. It is very unsafe indeed but at least it is fun to explore. So here I go climbing along the narrow fort, balancing myself on the top of the fort's wall. Wish me luck.

Photobucket

See. This is very narrow. Only enough to put a foot at a time.

Photobucket

Ok, I am still kicking.

Photobucket

As I climbed higher, the view got better.

and the top got wider.

Photobucket

Let me present to you the view from the top of Genoese Fortness.

Photobucket

This boat looks so small from here.

Photobucket

These must be fallen rocks from the cliff.

Photobucket

It is indeed very dangerous to climb up here without any safety precautions. Dont believe me? Let me show you how steep the cliff is. I walked my way up on the top of the fortness wall from the middle small tower. Good thing I did not fall, if not................. CHOI!! *touch wood* But, ya, it is real steep. Kids, do not try please.

Photobucket

So this is me again at the top. So sad noone to take photo for me and I broke my tripod ages ago.

Photobucket

After a tiring and intensive climb, I decided to lie down on one of this huge rock to take a rest and to enjoy the scenery.

Photobucket

Photobucket

After resting enough, I begin making my way down. Oh no... same way again... but hey, wait, what is this? I dont know if you can see it from this picture but there is a cable around it.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The cable seems to go all the way down the slope.

Photobucket

Hmm.. is this a short cut to go down? But it looks steep. Oh well, I prefer to go by the top of the wall.

Photobucket

Coming down from the top, I went into one of the towers.

And I finally saw someone there for can help me take a photograph.

Photobucket

More pictures of the fortness.

Somehow I decided to walk back instead of waiting for the local bus and so I did. A 15-20mins bus ride turned out to be a near an hour walk. Here are some pictures taken along the way. Saw this interesting 3 crosses standing tall on the top of a nearby hill.

Photobucket

Hey, what's this?

Photobucket

Reaching the bus station. Here are some more soviet/communists related things.

Tonight is my last night here in Simferopol and my hosts, Jackie and Ah Loy decided that we should go out for dinner. They brought me to this nice place which I dont remember the name.

Photobucket

This does not look delicious but trust me, it is!!

Photobucket

After dinner, we took a walk in town. Here's a picture of Ah loy and me. The word that starts with the letter C means simferopol in russian.

Photobucket

Ya.... They were drinking and celebrating cause I am finally leaving. I was such a trouble to them. HAHA...

Photobucket

No la.. I am kidding. Its to a new found friendship.

Anyway, I suddenly got a bad diarrhoea after the drinks. I haven complain about my stomach for quite sometime already yeah? At least not as often as I did when I was in China. Luckily for me, my hosts are all finally year undergrad doctors. So I was very well taken care of. It only took awhile before AhLoy diagnose that I have irritable bowel syndrome.

Well, he is so right!! That was exactly what was told to me when I went to see a specialist years back. Steady right? I am sure he will become a great doctor. And so will Jackie and all her friends. Good luck to them.

I felt better after a few hours of rest and I carried out my plans as usual. Went to the train station and boarded my overnight train to KharKiv.

From hosts, we became friends and we still keep in touch till date. Jackie, Ah Loy and SinYee see you in Singapore one day ya? Or I might drop by malaysia to pay you a visit with my beloved motorcycle. Till then, good luck and work hard towards saving lives. 医者父母心! May you all be 华佗再世!
