Day 74 & 75: Crimean Tatar History
DAY 74
Did nothing much today. Its morning again by the time we got back from clubbing. So I bet you know what happens next. Well, slept, woke up, took a few photos and thats it.
I got to the train station 45 minutes before departure today. Dont want to miss my train again.
And so I am finally on my way. Next stop: Simferopol.
As I lied my on bed, I looked back at what I had done for the past few days. Drinking, Clubbing, Pubbing, eating at restaurants, I almost forgetten the fact that I am actually backpacking. No no NO. This is not the way to do it. I have to tighten my belt from now on.
DAY 75
After a night sleep on the train, I arrived in Simferopol pretty early in the morning and I was very eager to meet my next host. Why? Because they are Malaysians and they speak the same "version" of English and Chinese as me. Well, we call it Singlish in Singapore. Not sure how they term it though. Anyway, I haven speak Singlish for ages. Wahahaha.. I better practise it before I lose it. :P
Despite I arrived there quite early in the morning, they came to pick me up from the train station's McDonalds. How nice. Then When I got to their place they made me breakfast. Something simple, yet familiar and delicious. Something which I haven had for ages. Something close to home. 快熟面加荷包蛋!!!
I can almost see the 食神 image appearing in my head. Yummy!!
After breakfast, I went to Bakhchysaray for sightseeing and my host Jackie came with me. Simferopol is sort of in the centre of Crimea (the southern part of Ukraine) and so it makes a good base to explore nearby attractions. So we took a elektrychka (sort of like a local train) to Bakhchysaray.
Photos taken in the elektrychka. Here's Jackie with our ticket.
Me.
Bakhchysaray (Back-chee-sa-rye) means garden palace and is a good place to get to know about the Crimean Tatar History. Where exactly? The Khan Palace ofcourse. Erected in the 16th century under the direction of the Persian, Ottoman and Italians architects. The only building that Catherine the Great spared when she was mass destructing Islamic Structures in the 18th and 19th century. Reason being, its romantic and sweet.
Here are the photos taken in the Khan Palace.
Walking into the inner courtyard, two fountain appears. This is the Golden Fountain. It is the more beautiful among the two.
However the more famous one is this, The Fountain of Tears. Made famous by Alexdrander Pushkin.
Red for love and Yellow for Chagrin.
The Palace Mosque
The Falcon Tower
Leaving the Palace, We decided to buy some Tatar Snacks to try. As soon as we bought the food, this dog kept following us.
Saw a wedding car. Ok, Conclusion. Most of the wedding cars in ex soviet countries I had been to love to have these 2 big wedding rings on the car roof. Krygyzstan also like that. Here also like that.
Bakhchysaray is also famous for their wine. So we have to try. And they sell them in cups as well.
Here's the Tatar snack.
Here's the wine.
We haven even start drinking yet and she looks drunk already.
After having a nice wine. We began our ascend to Uspensky Monastery, possibily the country's cutest little church. From there, rising 200m, the long and bluff plateau, Chufut-Kale (Chew-Fewt-Kar-Lay), houses a honeycomb of caves and structures where people took refuge for centuries, came into sight. This breathtaking view is the highlight of this visit.
Me pretending to be drunk.
Jackie already "drunk". Was she trying to run or was she doing 醉拳? I think its the latter.
Going back to Simferopol. The train station and its surroundings. This place reminds me of Krygyzstan.
When we got back, we met up with another of my host, Ah Loy, and we had dinner together.
Where am I sleeping tonight? In a student apartment full of Malaysians. I always thought that the china Chinese outnumber all other overseas chinese. But this time round, the Malaysians win!
