Day 1: Cantonese China
The first day of my Cold Journey was a long and tiring one. The main reason was because I did not have enough sleep the night before. Not because I was too excited that I could not fall asleep but because I had a number of last minute things to be done. Anyway, it was really nice of Dylan to volunteer himself to wake up so early in the morning to fetch me from my place and send me to the airport. Thanks pal!!
First stop: MACAU.
2 of my friends went to Macau with me, afterwhich they will be heading to HongKong themself. One of them did not bring a single cent at all. *FAINT*
My plan: To spend half a day in Macau and then enter Mainland China in the evening.
Reason: There is nothing much that interests me in Macau. Also, Macau is not far away from Singapore and can be done on a short getaway together with HongKong or ShenZhen. So there is no need to spend too much time here this time round. I would rather spend more time on some further places.
Macau, the world most crowded place lived up to its name. With half a million of poeple living in an area LESS than 30km square, the streets and roads are indeed very narrow and overly crowded. I visited places like the RUINS OF ST PAUL, CHURCH OF ST DOMINIC, MONTE FORT, LARGO DO SENADO and THE STREETS OF HAPPINESS. I also saw the MACAU TOWER and CASINO LISBOA
RUINS OF ST PAUL
CASINO LISBOA
on the way up to MONTE FORT, we saw many uncles chatting in the park.
At MONTE FORT
We were all surprise to see our common friend here. We have to take a picture with him. HAHAHA. (My friends from my previous workplace will know who am I refering to) :P
Friends from my previous workplace, Guess what is the name of this photo? HAHAHA... (write you answer in the message box on the rightside of this page). :P You can also ask Eric or Tienhui for the answer.
This cannon is aimming at Macau's most famous Casino Lisboa. Gambling is bad. That's why. HAHA.
View from the fort.
After visiting these places, it is time for me to leave Macau for Mainland China.
As Macau is a Special Economic Zone of China, you have to go through custom clearance in order to get into Mainland China. It is no difference from a border crossing between 2 countries. Your passport will be stamp here.
My friends sent me off to the border. Goodbye!!! (By the way, can you guess which one of them came without money?)
There were tons of people at the border but thank god there is a queue specially for foreigners like me. There are not much foreigners here so that's good. Citizens of China, Macau and Hongkong were in other queues. But my custom clearance did not go as smoothly. I was being questioned for quite awhile by the custom due to the visa of certian countries that I have in my passport. Had to do quite an explanation before they let me pass and when that is over, I am in CHINA!!! So Macau is considered done. 1 more country added to my country travelled list. YEAH!! :)
ZhuHai is the city that I arrived in. GuangDong is the province that I am in. Many people here still prefer to speak Cantonese over Mandarin. So at first I do not feel like I am in China, I thought I am in HongKong or still in Macau.
However, people in ShanTou, another city here in GuangDong province, speaks Teochew but not Cantonese. That is where my grandparents were from before they migrated to Singapore many years ago. That is where my chinese roots origin. That is also where one of the most expensive mandarin ornages, Pong Kum, were imported from into Singapore during Chinese New Year. Maybe I should pay a visit to ShanTou.
Anyway, Brice, a fellow biker friend of mine, picked me up at the border and then treated me to dinner. THANK YOU Brice!! On the way to dinner, I saw one interesting sight. The car in front of ours suddenly stopped in the middle of the road and I really mean in the middle of the road as in the most outer lane. Then the driver winds down his window to talk to a girl. Seconds later, she boarded the car. What was the conversion about? What happens after? Its up to your imagination.
Along the way to the dinner place. This is the Zhuhai fisher girl.
We also passby a chinese junkboat that was converted into a restaurant.
After dinner, I checked into my BinGuan (Guesthouse). TIENHUI, if you are reading this, I paid 1/3 of the price as compared to your hotel room, and I have free internet access in my room. hahaha. Big twin sharing bed somemore leh. :P
